Abstract (EN)

The effect of glisemic control on basal platelet activation in patients with type 2 diabetesmellitusAims: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of glisemic control on basal plateletactivation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to compare with healthy controls. Therelations between platelet activation markers and HbA1c level, duration of diabetes, smokingstatus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, BMI and treatment regimen were investigated.Material and methods: Seventy type 2 diabetic patients who were not using anticoagulantsand/or drugs affects platelets (aspirin, warfarin, steroids or non-sterid anti-inflammatory drugsetc.) and 17 healthy controls were included in the study. The blood samples were drawn with19 gauge needle and citrate was used as an anticoagulant so that platelets did not activate bycollecting and examinating. A spesific and sensitive method of platelet activation, flowcytometry were used for the measurements. In the study, monoclonal antibody CD41 wasused as specific platelet indicator and monoclonal antibodies formed against CD42b, CD61,CD63 and CD62p were used as platelet activation markers. Results: In our study, there was no significant relation between activation markers andduration of diabetes, smoking status, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, BMI and treatmentregimen. Basal level of CD62p was lower in diabetics than in control group. But thesedifference was not statisticaly significant. CD62p level was significantly lower in patientswith poor glisemic control (HbA1c>= %10) than in tight control (HbA1c<% 7).Conclusions: Our finding indicate that type 2 DM may associated with decreased basalplatelet activation, especially in patients with poor glisemic controls. Keywords: Type 2 DM, Platelet activation, CD62, CD41/CD61, CD63
