Abstract (EN)
Object: This study is conducted in order to examine the diabetes monitoring behavior and the effecting factors for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Method: The study was conducted with 129 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus at a diabetes education outpatient clinic of a university hospital in a descriptive, cross-sectional, comparative and correlational manner. Data were collected via a form created by a researcher, which contains information related to diabetes mellitus follow up of the individuals, and questions related to applications thereof. During data evaluation descriptive statistics (number, percentages, mean, standard deviation), chi square test, t-test, Mann Withney U, Spearman Correlation, and Kruskall Wallis analysis of variance were used. Findings: At the end of the study, it was discovered that individuals with diabetes have scored below average in knowing how frequently their monitoring are, and actually implementing these monitoring. A significant correlation between the individuals' knowing the frequency of their monitoring and their age, educational level, and additional chronic diseases other than diabetes has been detected. It was also discovered that the patient who see the same diabetes nurse consistently have a higher rate of knowing their frequency of monitoring and actually implementing these. Other socio-demographic and medical characteristic did not display a significant correlation with knowing the frequency of monitoring and implementing them. It was also found that, patients who know how frequent their monitoring should be do not implement them, and the reason of this related to the individual and the health system. Result: It was found that individuals with type 2 diabetes are insufficient in knowing and implementing the monitoring recommended for managing the complications and disease. It is thought that employing diabetes nurses in each health institution and informing the patient regarding the monitoring during diabetes training will raise awareness and increase the level of implementation.
