Assess the reliability and validity of the diabetes symptoms checklist scale among Turkish tip 2 diabetes mellitus patients

The aims of this study were to translate the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale into Turkish and to assess the reliability and validity of the turkish version of the diabetes symptoms checklist scale among Turkish Tip 2 diabetes mellitus patients. This research was carried out on 340 patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Departman of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases clinic of Akdeniz University, between January 25, 2011 and April 1, 2011. Personal information forms developed by the researcher and the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale were used as the data tools. All data were collected by authors during face-to-face interviews.The questionnaire was traslated using a back-translation technique. The internal consistency, item analysis, test retest and parallel form methods were used to determine the reliability of the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale Turkish version. Cronbach?s alpha coefficients of the inventory were found between 0.75 and 0.92. In item analysis of the inventory results, all of the correlations between inventory items were significantly higher. Positive correlations were observed between the variables. The criterion validity Turkish version of the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale was determined by item analysis based on differences between averages of upper-lower group item scores. When the mean scores of items of the upper and lower groups of the inventory were examined, the differences between groups were found statistically insignificant. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the construction validity of the inventory and factor loading values for all but one item were found between 0.36 and 0.89. According to the result of factor analysis, the orginal scale with the Turkish version of the subscales were similar.In line with the results obtained from the research, the Turkish version of the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale was found to be a reliable and valid means to measure the level in effect on symptoms in Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. It is recommended that the Turkish version of the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale should be applied on different groups with different socio-demographic features and the validity and reliability of analysis should be examined.
