Abstract (EN)
This thesis comprehensively addresses the fundamental concepts of structural dynamics, the design process of machine foundations under dynamic loads, and the selection of the appropriate foundation type. The proper design of machine foundations requires the integration of civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, and machine design disciplines. The combination of these disciplines plays a critical role in both the structural safety of the foundation and the performance of the machine. In foundation design, frequency and amplitude analyses are compared to select the appropriate foundation. To prevent the risk of resonance, the correct selection of the natural frequency of the machine and foundation system and ensuring that permissible amplitude values are not exceeded form the fundamental principle of the design. Additionally, if vibrations that could damage neighboring structures or equipment are anticipated, suitable damping materials may need to be used to mitigate these vibrations. These materials include options such as rubber, neoprene, steel springs, wood, and pneumatic dampers. However, if the desired vibration amplitudes cannot be achieved despite using dampers, vibration isolation methods such as trench barriers can also be preferred. While the shape of machine foundations is generally determined by the geotechnical engineer and the machine manufacturer, the design engineer must meet design criteria using tools such as vibration analysis theory, modeling techniques, and soil dynamics. This thesis examines the response of the foundation to the vibrations of commonly used industrial machines, specifically reciprocating (piston) and rotary machines. The selected foundations are two different types of block foundations that are typically used in many industrial facilities. The foundation examples are presented in a standard format that includes a series of steps to ensure a complete foundation design.
