The position of women in the cinema of Nuri Bilge Ceylan in the context of inequality gender roles

In this thesis, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s cinematography was examined in terms of the reflections of gender inequality. Nuri Bilge Ceylan has an important place in Turkish and world cinema, and he is known to be an important artist both in national and international community with his own unique style and aesthetic understanding. Given the extensive reach and impact of Ceylan’s cinema, examining gender roles in his work is an impartant academic endeavor. Since cinema cannot be abstracted from social structures and their transformations, the thesis will also include an examination of the social and historical context. The thesis employs qualitative methods and examines Ceylan’s filmography in terms gender related representations of the characters. The theoretical framework vii of the study incorporates concepts and modes of analysis put forward by feminist film theory. In addition, elements of semiotics and psychoanalytical theories are used to shed light on visual narratives as well as characters. In this sense, the overall approach of the thesis is interdisciplinary.
