Özet (EN)
Faced with economic problems, particularly after 2010, and a democracy crisis, people teamed up in the squares with a general sense of frustration, anger, and helplessness, as well as a sense of collective consciousness. Individuals did not believe that the economic and social policies proposed to address current problems and discontents were adequate to combat the crisis. Participants created a collective consciousness by making calls on online platforms that represented their concerns and priorities. They urged people to camp and gather in public squares to force politicians to confront their unsatisfactory economic policies and the general discontent of the people. In order to defend popular sovereignty, the city square movements emerged in an effort to reinvent liberal representative democracy by emphasizing equality, action, care, and common values. New negotiation and participatory decision-making arenas have emerged as a result of this process, which can now be scaled much more easily with the use of not only information channels but also digital platforms. Popular movements that can be classified as city square movements will be discussed, as well as their basic dynamics, causes of emergence, and social media relations in this study. The goals and problems of these movements differ; however, they share some common features. Unlike earlier movements, such as workers' movements, these new "square movements" are concerned with the expectations of a diverse range of groups, each with its own set of social problems and demands. Modern democracies, however, are insufficient to meet these demands, and problems with representation mechanisms are also a significant barrier to political participation.
