Abstract (EN)

Introduction: The aim of this study is to measure the knowledge about cancer screening testings of healthy women over the age of 20 and healthy men over the age of 50 living in Trabzon city and districts, to learn how much of them applie these tests and to compare our data within Turkey?s and world?s data.Material and Methods: This study was carried out by the Oncology Department of Internal Medicine of Karadeniz Technical University Medical Faculty. The study protocol was approved by the Karadeniz Technical University Medical Faculty Local Ethics Committee. Participiants were evaluated according to the survey form. Participiants were questioned about servical cancer , breast cancer , colorectal cancer and prostate cancer according to their groups. In our survey form we asked the age, sex, occupation, adress, education, social security, family history of cancer, breast self examination, breast examination by a physician, breast ultrasound and mammography motivations frequency, the frequency of Pap smear awareness and motivations, the frequency of fecal occult blood test awareness and motivations, the frequency of rectosigmoidoscopy awareness and motivations, the frequency of PSA awareness and motivations of participiants. As a result we interviewed 1496 women between 20-40 years old, 1716 women over the age of 40, 1070 women over the age of 50 and 922 men over the age of 50 , totally 5204 person.Findings: In total, % 48,1 of 4282 women have heard breast self examination, % 51,9 haven?t heard.% 23,7 of 4282 women have been doing breast self examination, % 76,3 have not been doing. % 10,4 of 4282 women have undergone clinical breast examination, % 89,6 haven?t. % 12,7 of 2785 women over the age of 40 had gone breast ultrasound/mammography screening, % 87,3 hadn?t. % 50,7 of 3785 married women have heard Pap smear test ( know what does it mean ) % 49,3 have not. % 9,3 of 3785 married women have recieved Pap smear test % 90,7 have not.In total, % 50,7 of 922 men have heard fecal occult blood test ( know what does it mean ) % 49,3 haven?t heard. % 30,1 of 922 men have undergone the fecal occult blood test, % 69,9 have not. % 51,8 of 922 men have heard rectosigmoidoscopy scan and % 10,9 of them have been made rectosigmoidoscopy .% 51,3 of 1023 women over the age of 50 have heard fecal occult blood test ( know what does it mean ) and %28,1 of them have undergone the test. % 53 of 1023 women over the age of 50 have heard rectosigmoidoscopy scan and % 15,8 of them have been made the scan .% 67 of 922 men have heard the PSA test and % 35,6 of them have been made the test.Conclusion: As a result, cancer disease is an important health problem in our today. Early diagnosis and treatment of cancer is often life saving. In our study we found out that the knowlegde of most people about cancer early diagnose is missing. We also found out that people with a family history of cancer have much more knowledge about cancer screening testings and are being made these tests more often. People should be informed about early cancer screening tests and should be encouraged to undergo them. We think that these informations can be given by health care professionals, television , internet, print media and brochures.
