Knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of people living in Trabzon about zoonotic diseases

Abstract (EN)

Our research was conducted on sample of 300 participants engaged in animal husbandry in Trabzon rural areas and sample of 300 participants who have never engaged in animal husbandry from central districts that same gender and age(±1) as those who are engaged in animal husbandry with the aim of determining the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of the people living in Trabzon on the information about zoonotic diseases. In our study, it was determined that 61.7% of the participants did not obtain information from any source related to zoonotic diseases, the most common source of information of people who obtain information was the television. It has been determine that Brucella, the most common zoonotic disease in the our country and world, is not known by 67.2% of the participants, symptoms in humans is not known by 91.7% of the participants and symptoms in animals is not known by 97.2% of the participants. It was determined that 70.6% of the participants took precautions for ticks when going to the field. In the study, bird flu that recognized by 96.7% of the participants was the most known zoonotic disease. It was found that the symptoms of anthrax disease on humans were not known by 97% of the participants, its symptoms on animals were not known by 96.7% of participants; rabies, one of the world's most common and deadly zoonoses, is defined as a very serious and fatal disease by only 38.8% of our participants. About zoonotic diseases, it has been seen that both people living in rural area and city center are lack of knowledge. In order to make up for the lack of information on this subject, trainings can be given to raise awareness of the people by the personnel of Provincial / Provincial Health Directorate. Seminars on zoonotic diseases can be organized in the rural areas by the Provincial/District Directorate of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. In all media publications, especially television, should be given more space to zoonotic diseases and in this way the public's awareness of these diseases will be increased.
