Investigation of the antimutagenic, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Trachystemon orientalis

Abstract (EN)

In this study antimicrobial, antioxidant and antimutagenic activities of Trachystemon orientalis leaf and stem extracts were investigated. The antimicrobial effect was investigated by disk diffusion method and the antimutagenic effect was investigated by Ames / Salmonella / microsomal test. Antioxidant properties of Trachystemon orientalis extracts were determined by investigating the effect of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and DPPH removal. It has been determined that all extracts exhibit antimicrobial activity at different ratios against the tested microorganisms. The highest antimicrobial activity was obtained using a leaf extract with a 21 mm inhibition zone against E. coli. The total flavonoid content in leaf and stem extracts was determined as 58.25 mg QE/g and 45.75 25 mg QE/g, respectively. The total phenolic contents of leaf and stem extracts were determined as 67.01 mg GAE/g and 54.04 mg QE/g, respectively. The highest DPPH removal activity of leaf and stem extracts was determined to be 65% and 59%, respectively, at a dose of 250 μg/mL. In the antimutagenicity test, the highest effect of leaf and stem extract was determined as 78.2% and 64.0% in the absence of S9 mixture, respectively. In conclusion, Trachystemon orientalis leaf and stem tissues have antioxidant activity which is a potential natural antimicrobial and antimutagenic
