The impact of protectionism strategies during the Trump era of the USA foreign trade policy on Turkey

This study analyzes the changes in the US foreign trade policy and how these changes affect developing countries. The study analyzes the issue from a political economy perspective. From a political economy perspective, a multidisciplinary study has been tried to be put forward by looking at the issue from both economic and political aspects. The US has used its protectionist foreign trade policy, especially against developing countries, and has tried to bring them closer to the political-economic line it wants. Developing countries, on the other hand, have fought against this US policy through economic, political and legal means It is investigated why the USA, which is one of the most important advocates of free foreign trade in general, with some exceptions, especially after World War II, has turned to protectionist policies in foreign trade in recent years. How protectionism, which came to the world agenda especially during the Trump era, affects developing countries is analyzed through the examples of Turkey and China. In the study, it is concluded that the protectionist strategies in the Trump-era US foreign trade policy have negative effects on Turkey's iron and steel industry in the short term, but in the long run, Turkey has eliminated this negative effect with the measures it has taken, including retaliation. With the measures it has taken and the protectionist foreign trade policy of the USA, Turkey has kept its negative impact on the Turkish economy limited both in terms of time and size.
