Abstract (EN)

Analysing of consumer magazines published in Turkey in the context of consumer culture phenomenon evaluated in general terms how mass media magazines reproduced and reinforced the consumption phenomenon with which forms and to what extent in the concept of consumer society and consumer culture. The contents, advertisements, promotions, visuals of the magazines that constitute the sample of the research and taking into account the place reserved for them, it is aimed to determine the functions of consumption. In the first part of the research, firstly communication within certain limits, especially mass communication is mentioned. It is mentioned how mass media affects individuals in the presentation of cultural values. In the second part, as in the first part, in order to provide theoretical support to the research, the concepts of consumption phenomenon, capitalism and consumption culture and consumption society associated with consumption are introduced and their changes over time. Also in this section it referred to the development of consumer culture in Turkey. In the last part of the research the definition of magazine publishing and the classification of magazine types are made, the past and the present of the magazine publishing in Turkey has been mentioned. Within the classified types of magazines, consumer magazines discussed separately, findings were obtained and evaluated with the content analysis and qualitative analysis method performed on the issues of Elle, Lezzet, İstanbul Life and Vogue published in 2019. As a result it has been determined that the content in different categories of consumer magazines published in Turkey, advertisements, promotions and visual cultural symbols via the construction of identity based on the desires of individuals, reproduces and reinforces in the context of consumption phenomenon that ensures the continuity of capitalism.
