Investigation of the presence of campylobacter jejuni, campylobacter coli and campylobacter lari in chicken meat offered for consumption

Abstract (EN)
In todays World, the most common reported bacterial food diseases is caused by Campylobacter spp. According to researches, Campylobacter spp. can be found in broilers intestinal flora, also farm animals like sheep and cows intestinal flora provides suitable habitat for Campylobacter spp. In this thesis, Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter lari were searched in broiler meat (chiken breast, wing, legs) which were sold in between November 2020 – February 2021 by using Real Time PCR methodology. For this purpose, 30 chicken wings, 27 chicken legs, 24 chicken legs, total 81 sample were analyzed. In this research, it is discovered that 18 % (15/81) of samples are contaminated by Campylobacter spp. C. jejuni was found in 13,33 % (4/30) of chicken wings, 7,41 % (2/27) of chicken legs but it was not found in any of chicken leg samples. C. coli was found in 3,33 % (1/30) of chicken wings, 25,93 % (7/27) of chicken legs and 4,17 % (1/24) of chicken breasts. C. lari was not found in any of samples. Campylobacter infections, which are considered as zoonosis that threatening public health, are very common in the world. Especially, due to the fact that Campylobacter jejuni is a normal member of the intestinal flora of poultry, hygiene rules during slaughter, especially in slaughterhouses; It is recommended to pay attention to cross contamination.
