The effect of the liberaization after 1980 on unemployment in Turkey

After 24th January decisions a significant transformation period started in Turkey's economy. Before 1980, a stable economic growth was expected from planned development, but contrary to expectations, development plans brought about economic crisis also with the effect of the changing conjuncture. As a solution to this economic crisis and with new political decisions parallel to the developments in the world, foreign expansion began between 1980-88 and after 1989 financial liberalization period started. These new economic policies affected many macroeconomic variables. One of the most significant of the these macroeconomic variables is unemployment. The phenomenon of the unemployment has taken more attention after that transformation process. In this work, the effect of the liberalization after 1980 on unemployment in Turkey will be analyzed. For this purpose, major approaches about employment market and unemployment will be discussed firstly. The issue will be evaluated within the framework of different schools' views while these basic approaches are handled. In the second part, the effect of the transformation in the economy of Turkey after 1980 on employment market will be analyzed. After this section briefly describes what it means to live in Turkey in the course of 1980 transition at first, change in labor market of Turkey will be approached from the perspective of unions, education gender discrimination and flexible employment structure. While viewing unemployment in Turkey, which constitutes the third part of the thesis, numeric data was used to study Turkey's position among other countries. This work aims a conclusion with a general evaluation and policy recommendations about unemployment in Turkey. Key words: Employment, Unemployment, Employment Market, Turkey, Liberal Policies
