Abstract (EN)
This study considers Ottoman-Turkish modernization in terms of women. It problematizes the transformations of the women in the framework of partiarchy from the late Ottoman period to the early years of the Republic. In this process, woman is being instrumentalized and used for the modernization of Turkish society by man. The Turkish Civil Law is searched in this framework. Turkish Civil Law brings many new rights to the woman. Turkish Civil Law has tried to improve the social place of woman but it has not been successfull in this process. Therefore, we argue that a patriarchal mentality dominates in some codes of the Turkish Civil Law.
