Abstract (EN)

Modulation is a tool in which various scales, sounds or maqams are added to save the performance or composition from monotony and make it more aesthetic. For this reason, the modulation is one of the most important topics in Turkish music. In the literature, there are detailed explanations and exemplifications regarding the definition of the modulation. However, few superficial studies have been encountered on how to perform a modulation. How to realize a concept, idea or movement is as important as knowing what they are. From this point of view, it is important to understand, explain and know how to perform the modulation separately or jointly according to the instruments. This study aims to be a guide for a wide audience, from amateurs to expert performers, on the modulation techniques of the Turkish music. The main focus of the study is on the techniques of modulation in Turkish music. It is considered to be of great importance because it is a study that names the techniques of modulation and contains detailed etudes. For the research; five performers in the field of ney, classical kemenche, oud, tanbur, qanun instruments and vocal performance, who were determined according to the determined criteria, were asked for their opinions on modulation and four modulation taksims/performances were requested from instrumentalists and two from vocal performers. The main melodies of these taksims were notated with explanations specific to the modulation. The video/audio recordings of the related taksims were transferred to the study using the QR code method. The researcher identified various modulation uses in the notated taksims, and the techniques were named and explained in detail in a separate step. Then, the five most commonly used maqams in the Turkish Music repertoire were determined for writing modulation etude. Examples of etudes were prepared for the explanation and educational use of modulation techniques. Thus, it is thought that the study will make an important contribution to the Turkish music literature on modulation. It is thought that the knowledge, experience, experience and memories of the performers who contributed to the study and the existing literature information also contribute to this study.
