Police image in Turkish detective dramas: An ideological comparison in traditional television and internet television broadcasts

In every period of history, the section that owns the current social and political power has developed various methods to maintain this power position and thus pacifying the masses under their power in various ways; in otherwords, they preserved the statusquo. The process of maintaining the current power of the ruling class was carried out by methods such as direct pressure and violence in pre-modern times. With the emergence of modern democracies, hegemonic powers have replaced the power provided by direct pressure and violence. After the development of masscommunication technologies, with the transformation of the field of communication into a scientific discipline, it was revealed by the studies within the scope of the school, which was conceptualized as critical communication studies, that the media were reproduced in modern states; it has argued that it is an institution that media test hegemonic imposition of the dominant ideology on society. On this plane, television dramas, one of themost popular formats of television andtelevision broadcasting, which marked the second half of the 20th century with the technology of transmitting image and sound at the same time, have become one of the most important research objects of critical communication studies over time. As a result of there searches, it was found that the dominant ideology was reproduced through television dramas; for this purpose, various attitudes and values are offered to people; all kinds of judgments and stereotypes are legitimized; Results have been obtained as people are directed to a certain intellectual perspective through the fictional narrative structure of dramas. When television dramas are viewed in terms of ideological representations, it is seen that detective dramas, as media texts that reflect the official security forces of the state, are also a very important research topic. Local detective dramas stand out as a very popular genre since the 1990s, when private television channels began in Turkey. In addition to its popularity in traditional television broadcasting, detective dramas are also filmed and broadcast on OTT TVs, which is a newtechnologyandone of the internet television genres whose influence is increasing day by day. At this point, although detective dramas in both traditionalt elevision and OTT TV's are fictionalized on the axis of dramatic narrative, there are various differences between these productions of the same genre broadcast on two different television platforms due to the differences in the platforms they are broadcast on. Within thes cope of this thesis, firstly, the relationship between the media and ideology is explained in a historical and theoretical context, emphasizing the ideological structures of television dramas with a deductive technique; Afterwards, the drama broadcasts on traditional television and the drama broadcasts on OTT TV'swere compared. Then, with how the detective dramas on traditional television reflect the police institution and police individuals, which Louis Althusser describes as the state's oppressive apparatus; The police image in detective dramas on OTT TV's was determined and compared ideologically, and the ideological differences of police images in detective dramas broadcast on two different television platforms were explained with their justifications.
