Gender and aspect of distal femur (Right/Left) in Turkish population

Total knee prosthesis is a frequently used material in the surgery. In order to use the correct prosthesis the distal femur measurements must be considered. The aim of this study is to determine whether the distal femur differs according to aspect and / or gender in Turkish population.Thus, the knee prosthesis imported from abroad can lead the way to choose the most suitable for the Turkish population. Using 138 dry bones in the study, at first aspects of the femurs were determined and eight parametres from femur distal and proximal parts were measured by a metre and digital caliper with 0.01 mm precision for gender determination. Five parametres were measured at the distal part (bicondylar width, depth of medial condyle and lateral condyle, depth and width of between the condyles) to evaluate whether these parameters differ according to femur aspect and gender. According to the results distal femoral sizes narrower than the women in the male Turkish population as well as all over the world. Distal femur measurements do not differ by aspect (right / left). The femur can be safely used for gender determination in cases where there is no possibility of making a sex determination with the pelvis or the skull. In addition, women's and men's measurements of the distal femur in Turkish populations arewider than Far East and Asian populations.These measurements are more similar to the measurements of the North American population.
