"Surrealism", which has emerged in the period when Europe suffers from the depression of the world wars, is accepted as the general category of the work of art which follows the dreams and the reality's traces which have remained in the subconscious minds of the individuals. Surrealism has started with Tristan Tzara in the area of literature, and had tremendous effects in the areas of painting, sculpture and art. The movement of surrealism, whose founders are Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst and Giorgi De Chirico, and whose main representatives are Louis Aragon, Bohumil Hrabal, André Breton, Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, Anthony Earnshaw, Alberto Giacometti, Gilberto Hernandez Ortega, Frida Kahlo, Luis Buñuel, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Francis Picabia, Raymond Queneau, Ray Caesar, Roland Penrose, Kay Sage, Yves Tanguy and Thomas Kinkade, may be defined as the reflection of the reality on the mind, by its broadest definition. Surrealism movement has also affected Turkish painting art, and Turkish painters have started to produce surrealist paintings after the emergence of the movement in the world. The patterns of surrealism may still be observed in the contemporary Turkish painting art. Hence, compiling and investigating the approaches and works of art of the surrealist Turkish painters is highly essential to gain a holistic perspective on the issue.
