The effect of ideology and depiction relationship on character fiction in Turkish novel (1920-1970)

When literature takes on ideological purpose and identity, it has more or less reflections on all genres of literature. Undoubtedly, the novel, which is an important literary genre, also gets its share from this ideological purpose and identity. In this case, it is unthinkable that depiction, one of the basic elements of the novel, remains independent from ideology. When the depiction takes on an ideological identity, the view of elements such as person, place, clothing, body, ethnic identity inevitably becomes different, and even often relies on sharp/absolute contrasts. The resulting depictions are usually almost black or white depictions in the paradox of sympathy-antipathy in accordance with this absolute opposition. It is because the view of the central gaze, which is built on ideological grounds, towards the self/us and others, and the way it presents them, are quite different due to the aforementioned ground of opposition. This leads to monochrome, one-dimensional depictions based on certain boundaries, which are generally the product of the author's mind and ideological perspective. As a result, the I/we or the other, the elements belonging to the two sides, come into existence with the identity that the author dresses them rather than their own identities. It is the main subject and problem of the study. Therefore, this study analyses the relationship between ideology and depiction in the context of the Turkish novel (1920-1970). In the first two parts of the study, the relationship between ideology and literature, ideology and depiction, and the background of ideological depiction are presented. In the third part of the study, it is tried to demonstrate how ideology shapes, influences and ideologises the depiction in the context of self/us and the other, especially in characters and the elements related to characters, through sample novels. The selection of these sample novels has been made by considering different ideologies. Because each ideology shapes the depiction according to its own belief and thought ground. Therefore, the study focuses on novels under the influence of not only one ideology but also different ideologies and provides examples from these novels.
