Contracting services in Turkish Russian economicrelations (1991-2001)

After the Cold War, the most important factor separating Turkish-Russian relations from the previous period can be seen as direct contacts between the peoples of the two countries. In this process, Turkey and Russia effectively is through economic and political transformation. The development of relations between the two countries has been influenced by the increased political dialogue both by economic relations and by the foreign policies of the two countries. When the Turkish employment data is examined, the share of the sector in total employment is around 6%, but this together with other related sectors reveals the real contribution to employment. However, it is seen that the employment structure of the sector is generally composed of low-education, seasonal workers, and offers effective opportunities in the short term when compared to other sectors for the Turkish economy, which is particularly exposed to unemployment problems caused by large migration waves from rural areas. Between the USSR and Turkey gas deal signed in 1984 and entered into force in 1987, which paved the way for the Turkish construction sector in Russia. Starting from 1989, Turkish contracting firms that started to undertake contracting works in cities such as Moscow, Minsk, Borisov and Kiev experienced serious difficulties and provided employment opportunities in this region. In 1990 with the collapse of the Soviet Union in the year 1990 s has maintained its importance as a major trade partner of Turkey after Russia, Germany. After the crisis of Kuwait and the Middle East market, which was closed after the Gulf War in 1990-1991, the Russian Federation became the biggest market for Turkish contracting. From 1990 on, 133 Turkish contracting companies undertook 733 projects and received a total of $ 12,8 billion in contracting. Although Turkish-Russian relations are not yet at the level of strategic partnership, this level has been achieved in sectors such as trade and energy. It can be pointed out that cooperation and competition in Turkish-Russian relations will continue for many years. The two countries are trying to turn the geopolitical struggle that has been going on for hundreds of years to economic cooperation in a sense. In this context, the continuity of the trade relations between the two countries, the state of trade relations, the contracting companies operating in Russia for many years despite the changing political and economic conditions to sign important projects, the effects of these two countries economic relations will be discussed.
