Ideology and subject in films subjected to Cyprus events before 1974 Peace Operation in Turkish cinema

The Island of Cyprus and the Turks living on the island have been one of the main agenda items of Turkey since the mid-1950s. It was in the late 1950s that Turkish cinema began to show interest in the island and its Turks. The first film that touches upon the Cyprus events is Kıbrıs'ın Belası Kızıl EOKA (Cyprus's Trouble Red EOKA), which was shot in 1959 by Nişan Hançer. This movie is followed by movies like Kıbrıs Şehitleri (The Martyrs of Cyprus, Behlül Dal-1960), Hancı'nın Kızı (The Innkeeper's Daughter, Ergün O. Nuri-1963), On Korkusuz Adam (Ten Fearless Men, Tunç Başaran-1964), Kıbrıs Volkan'ı (The Cyprus Volcano, Ural Ozan-1965), Severek Ölenler (Those Who Died Lovingly, Osman Fahri Seden-1965), Dişi Düşman (The Feminine Enemy, Nejat Saydam-1966), Fırtına Beşler (The Storm Five, Aram Gülyüz-1966), Fedailer (Kayhan Arıkan-1966), Göklerdeki Sevgili (My Love in the Sky, Remzi Jöntürk-1966), Severek Dövüşenler (Those Who Fight Lovingly, Adnan Saner-1966), Fedai Komandolar Kıbrıs'ta (Fedai Commandos In Cyprus, Nejat Okçugil-1967), Komandolar Geliyor (Commandos Are Coming, Nejat Okçugil-1967). These films, on the one hand, bring the problems of the island Turks to the agenda of Turkey, on the other hand, help the public to prepare for a possible operation to be carried out against the island of Cyprus. In this study, how the Cyprus events and the problems of the Turkish society living in Cyprus are reflected in Turkish cinema and how the ideological production of a possible war about Cyprus is carried out by analizing of Kıbrıs Şehitleri, On Korkusuz Adam ve Göklerdeki Sevgili which were selected by the purposeful sampling method among the films shot before the Cyprus Peace Operation. As a result of the analyzes made, it was concluded that a very strong nationalist ideology was dominant in the films examined, all of which were shot before Turkey's intervention in Cyprus, and that the Greek characters were equipped with negative features and presented as pure villains within this ideology, while the Turkish characters had completely positive features.
