Representation of authority in Turkish cinema: Analysis of the films Umutsuzlar, Dila Hanım and Kibar Feyzo in the context of Weber's types of authority

With the people coming together and creating an organized structure to sustain their existence, the concept of power has been born. For the founded power to maintain the communal hierarchy, it has to be imposed by an authority. The authority showing variety according to the sources of the power, is also seen to be constructed by a system of representation which is cinema. Although the concept of power in Turkish cinema has been questioned with previous studies, it has been understood that the representation of the concept of authority, which must exist for the continuation of the ongoing power, through different typologies has not been examined. Because of this, with this study, in order to compensate for this aforementioned deficiency, it was examined how the authority typology (charismatic authority, traditional authority, rational-legal authority), which is currently the most referenced authority explanation and which belongs to German sociologist Max Weber, is represented in Turkish cinema. For this purpose, the film Umutsuzlar, directed by Yılmaz Güney in 1971, in context of charismatic authority, the film Dila Hanım, directed by Orhan Aksoy in 1977, in context of traditional authority and the film Kibar Feyzo, directed by Atıf Yılmaz in 1978, in context of rational-legal authority has been subjects of our studies. In addition, in Turkish cinema generally which types of authority are affirmed, and how positive and negative representations differs by the movie genres has been researched in.
