Abstract (EN)
This study describes the rebellion against the Republic and its revoltions in Menemen on 23 December 1930. Prior to the Menemen Incident, there were a series of political and social changes that had profoundly affected Turkish society. Negative impacts of the 1929 Economic Crisis have also overwhelmed the public. Emergence of the Menemen Incident along with the effects of the economic crisis and the discontent of the public by the changes, left the government of the era in a particularly challenging position. According to parliamentary minutes, court records and newspapers of the period; six people from the Naqshbandi Order, headed by Dervish Mehmet of Crete, came to Menemen from Manisa to incite people to revolt against the Republic and its reforms. Ensign Kubilay, sent to suppress the rebellion was martyred by beheading and the neighborhood guards Şevki and Hasan who want to intervene in were martyred by gunfire during the uprising. Subsequently, the troops sent from the regiment suppressed the uprising and gained control. In order to restore authority and maintain public order, the government declared and imposed martial law in Menemen, Balıkesir and Manisa. Hundreds of people directly and indirectly related to the incident were brought to Menemen and interrogated. Those identified suspicious after the interrogation were prosecuted and sentenced to various penalties. Menemen Incident has left traces on Menemen and the Republic of Turkey that are difficult to fade. Keywords: Menemen Incident, Kubilay, One-Party Period, opposition, press, sects
