Yön movement in the Turkish left construction

Left has started to find its own place in Turkish politics in the late periods of Ottoman Empire. Late periods of Ottoman Empire represent a start for Turkish Left and the fundamental principles of Turkish Left was started to be formed in those periods. Turkish Left had tried to construct its own political form from the early periods of the Republic to 1960's. Although it was not in a clear development in active political area, Turkish Left constructed its own field of expression in certain newspapers and journals. Social changes occurred with 27 May coup. These changes became visible with the increase in number of universities, literacy rate and number of newspapers and journals. Turkish Left has started to find a new premise for itself with the increase in use of political concepts like democracy and socialism and with newspaper and journal survey that it has experienced before. Many intellectuals who were aware of this quest and unite around Doğan Avcıoğlu established Yön journal which would be a political movement in the future. Yön journal started broadcasting in 1961 and continued until 1967 when its broadcasting life ended. Yön published 222 issues intermittently. Yön, which pointed out various topics and reached large circulations in a short period of time, affected the progress of a period. It is significantly important to analyze the expressions of Yön journal with the principles of socialism and social democracy and historical development of the Turkish Left together.
