Abstract (EN)

In linguistics, the augmentation category, generally regarded as the counterpart to diminution in terms of meaning, content, and function, is examined within the scope of evaluative morphology. Although augmentation structures exhibit commonalities across many languages, they may differ in their formation and usage purposes. Augmentative constructions function not only as markers indicating that objects or situations are "large," but also as multifaceted indicators reflecting emotional or discursive attitudes such as belittlement, contempt, intimacy, respect, compassion, pity, hyperbole, and irony. In this study, the category of augmentation is examined with a focus on Turkish, primarily through a synchronic approach and, when necessary, supported by diachronic data. The research considers augmentation not only in terms of formations visible at the surface structure, but also through the semantic extensions and functional diversity it embodies in the deep structure. Across the world's languages, the notion of augmentation is represented sometimes by morphemes that directly fulfill this function, and at other times by multifunctional words or word groups. In Turkish, however, augmentation emerges at phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactic, and metaphorical levels, often through the multifunctionality of existing linguistic elements. Within this framework, the functions of augmentative structures in the language are analyzed, and the cases in which they convey both quantitative and qualitative increase are classified. It has been observed that augmentation comes to the fore semantically, pragmatically, and discursively.
