An evaluation of the speaking skill activities held in the Turkish for foreigners course books in line with European Language Portfolio

The Council of Europe which one of the main target is to develop a common concensus between European countries suggests European Language Portfolio being implementation of Common European Framework of reference for Language to guide those who learn and teach languages. ELP includes proficiencies suggested for the level of four languages skills under the headline of "indivual language achievements". In this research the speaking skills held in the Turkish for foreigners course books were evaulated in line with European Language Portfolio. As documents, basic (A1-A2), intermediate (B1-B2) and advanced (C1) levels İstanbul Turkish course books for foreigners, Gazi Turkish course books for foreigners, Yedi İklim Turkish and Yeni Hitit course books are reviewed, the speaking skills were detected and categorized according to the proficiencies of ELP. The collected data was anaylzed by the descriptive analyze techniques percentage and frequency. The focus group interview was realized with the study group of this research consisting of lecturers and students who get educated during 2016-2017 at Turkish education centers (TÖMER and DİLMER) of Yıldız Techique University, Sakarya University and Istanbul University. The focus group interview includes 5 questions relating with the speaking skill activities held on the above mentioned Turkish course books respecting their contribution to the students daily life, academic life and contents and distrubution of speaking skills actitivities. The collected data was analyzed by the content analyze. The gathered findings revealed that the speaking skill activities on the Turkish course books for foreigners are compatible with ELP however speaking skill actitives concerning the eductional and proffessional subjects should be held more. It is also observed that the speaking skills held in the Turkish course books are contributing to the daily life of but not contributing to the academic life of students.
