Evaluation of story books in terms of vocabulary in teaching Turkish as a foreign language: Sample of Salih Story Series

The importance of vocabulary in teaching Turkish as a foreign language and promoting culture is the starting point of this research. The aim of the study was determined as to reveal the vocabulary consisting of idioms, proverbs, formulaic words, reduplication, exclamation and proper nouns in the storybooks used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, and to reveal the frequency and prevalence of the words in the storybooks. constitutes the whole. The sample of the study is; Salih Story Series prepared within the scope of PİKTES Project: Salih Begins School, Salih is at Home, Salih is in the Village, Salih's Travel Diary, Salih is Playing a Game, Salih is Patient, Salih's Holiday Visit, Salih's One Day, Salih is in the Bazaar and Salih is in the Nature and Animal Museum named it consists of 10 story books and activities in story books. These stories and the activities in the stories were examined in terms of word frequency and vocabulary. In the research, "document analysis method" was used. The storybooks were obtained by downloading from the PİKTES Project website. The story texts were transferred to the computer environment and spelling errors were checked. In order to determine the frequency of the words, the words were freed from inflectional suffixes. Compound words, proverbs, idioms, relationship words are arranged to be counted as a single word. Cibakaya 2.0 program was used to determine the word frequency of the storybooks. The word frequency list of each story book was created and the frequency of use of the vocabulary elements, the frequency of use in the total word and the total number of words of the stories were included in the tables. The data obtained were interpreted, the presence of the vocabulary elements in the story texts was examined and it was determined that the story texts were missing in terms of some vocabulary elements such as reduplications and exclamations. It was determined that no proverbs were found in the stories belonging to the Salih Story Series, and the presence of other vocabulary elements was discussed in the findings section. According to the data obtained at the end of the study, suggestions were made such as that the story books used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language should be arranged in accordance with the levels in terms of the number of words and frequency ratios, it should be stated that the story books are suitable for which age group and which language level, the use of vocabulary elements can be diversified and increased in the story books.
