Recording social memory and building collective memory in video art in Turkey after 1990

This research focuses on the construction of social memory through video art in Turkey. Video art, whether it is individual or social, has been both a tool and a medium for recording time and space for artists. Contemporary artists in Turkey have mostly included video in their practices as a memory recording beyond being an aesthetic and intellectual medium since the 1990s. This thesis focuses on video studies, which can be evaluated as a way of keeping social memory in Turkey, from the 1990s to the present, in the context of the historical process. The thesis focuses on the common parameters in the video production of the artists, which are fed by the methods developed within the framework of social sciences, within the framework of certain concepts and themes. In this context, space has been categorized and evaluated as the concepts of identity, migration, ecology, collectivity, participation, video activism and autonomous archive. These categories created in the thesis are also a current archive in terms of Turkish art in the memory recording of today's video art and the construction of common memories.
