Turkey-European Union relations and terror

SUMMARYIn the very beginning of the 21st century, the world entered to a newperiod after the 11 September 2001 attacks; which put the terrorism in a verythreatening position in the people?s living space more than ever. In this research,the terrorism issue is approched in a scientific way and the effects of the terroristorganizations over the bilateral relations on the basis of the EU-Turkey relationsare analysed. First of all, the international organizations and some of the EUmember state?s perceptions towards terrorism is investigated and secondly theTurkey- EU relations at the basement of the PKK case is searched.After 11 September, EU started a comprehensive strategy for combatingterrorism. As a matter of fact, internationalization of terrorism and the widespread of terrorist activities in Europe has begun requestioning the terrorismproblem more seriously among unity members. In relation to this, in the thesis,the regular reports on Turkey?s progress towards accession is taken intoconsideration as trying to clarify the compulsory steps towards strugglingterrorism. The reforms that are performed by Turkey, due to its EU membershipclaim, have contributed both to democracy and to combating terrorism. However,the reason why countries are not capable of sustaining the effective cooperationyet is; the divergent interpretations and changing perceptions of terrorism in everystate.
