Education of Syrian refugee children in Turkey and Europeanization

Abstract (EN)

This study analyzes the educational needs of Syrian refugee children and educational services that Turkey offers, also discusses whether services are provided at a sufficient level in the context of Europeanization which is an important concept in the literature. In the first part of the study, the main and sub-questions of the thesis have been stated within the context of Europeanization. In the second chapter of the study, theoretical framework of Europeanization and how it is reflected in EU institutions and policies have been explained. The third chapter focuses on institutional and financial implications of Europeanization. Visibility of the EU institutions and EU funds in public institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Turkey have been examined. Also in this section, Europeanization studies on migration and education in Turkey have been examined. In the fourth chapter, the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey has been summarized in general terms with statistical data. Also Europeanization of education for Syrian refugees in Turkey and related projects of Ministry of Education and NGOs have been examined. In addition, education policy for children refugees in Turkey has been described in comparison with European norms. In the conclusion chapter of the thesis, the findings of European Commission reports fort he years between 2011-2019 have been examined. Finally, the answer of the main question of the thesis "'Is there Europeanization in Syrian refugee children's education in Turkey?' has been sought and it has been concluded that Turkey's educational policies towards Syrian refugees couldn't reach institutional level within the logic of Europeanization.
