Türkiye'deki üniversite psikolojik danışma merkezlerinde görev yapan ruh sağlığı uzmanları: Deneyimler, zorluklar, ihtiyaçlar ve kaynaklar

This qualitative study examined the experiences of mental health professionals working in university counseling centers (UCCs) in Türkiye. It explored what it is like to provide mental health services in the university context, focusing on working conditions, positive experiences, challenges, needs, and support resources. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with ten mental health professionals working at universities in different regions. Obtained data was analyzed using content analysis with the help of MAXQDA software, and the findings were presented under five main themes: working conditions, positive experiences, challenges, needs, and support resources. Physical working conditions, especially being on campus and having access to nature as well as working with university students were found among the most commonly reported positive experiences, while the most frequently mentioned challenges included center structure, managerial attitudes and financial difficulties. Professional needs—particularly opportunities for ongoing education—along with managerial and structural, and financial needs, were identified as primary needs. Supportive resources were diverse and among others included providers' internal processes, close personal relationships and colleagues at the center. This study contributes to the limited literature on UCCs in Türkiye by underscoring institutional and contextual dynamics. Recommendations include establishing structured supervision systems, promoting campus-wide mental health awareness, and developing policies to support professionals' well-being.
