Abstract (EN)

Turkey, which is surrounded by sea on three sides, should have to be a leader in sea transportation with its unique geographical location. However, the Turkish merchant fleet mainly consist of elderly and small tonnage vessels and so, Turkey is far behind the expectations. In this study, the shipping investment and financing strategies of the marine companies in Turkey is investigated and the drawbacks regarding to those strategies are set out. The issues in this study have been analyzed by using qualitative research techniques. Using purposive sampling method the marine transportation companies have been identified. In this study, the "interwiev" technique which is one of the qualitative research data collection techniques, has been utilized. The collacted data has been scrutinized by the program NVivo 10. In this study, the financing praxis of the banks as lenders, have also been expounded. As an out come of the study, it has been conculuded that the adequate resources has not been allocated to the maritime sector; the credit institutions lack sufficient expertise; and institutional support is not on the desired level.
