Career management at the state university in Turkey: Yildiz Technical University and the university of Yalova comparison

In this research, it is aimed to determine the problems faced by academicians working in state universities during career planning, career management and career development stages. The target population of this study consists of academicians working at Yildiz Technical University and Yalova University. In this research, "Individual and Organizational Career Management Scale" prepared by Ereş (2004) for her PhD thesis titled "Career Management in the Ministry of National Education" was adapted as Individual Career Management and used as a data collection tool. The scale of the research includes the realization level of individual career management and the dimensions of perception level of organizational career management. A career is a person's work-related activities and the goals that a person has acquired during his or her life. Career includes the positions in which an individual has worked during his / her working life. These definitions are objective career descriptions. Subjective career, on the other hand, consists of values, attitudes, behaviors and motivation concepts and emerges with the position of the individual in advanced ages (Erdoğan, 2009: 4). In this study, career steps of academicians and the problems they have experienced during this process have been investigated and it has been tried to shed light on these problems. In this study, the individual career planning of academicians and the effects of universities on this career planning process and the expectations of academicians are also investigated. It was aimed to identify common problems by comparing career goals, titles, age groups, gender, seniority and individual and corporate career planning and career management practices on the basis of universities.
