Examination of cinema and television museums in Turkey and on the World

This thesis headed "Examination of Cinema and Television Museums in Turkey and on The World" analyses these museums in terms of foundation, administration, collections, exhibition and presentation methods and social media and its purpose is shed light on becoming museum process of cinema which was officially founded in 1895 and on television which would be founded afterwards. In the way of documentation and presentation of both national and international film history to public, cinema and television museums are important. Through this work process, findings obtained both with examinations realised on-site both with field studies reveal that some of these museums don't adopt passive presentation systems and instead, with various activities, they make society conscious about film and television culture and raise awareness with education activities concerning how to approach to cinema and they unfold that how museums have the function to become "social centres" with gather different parts of society. In point of analyzing 63 museums on the world, this thesis is among the first comprehensive studies. Therefore it will be a source for people who want to study in this field afterwards, as well as an example of comparison for Turkey in which there are very few museums in this kind. It is also aimed to show the place of cinema and television museums in museum world and to compose a database of the aspects of similar and different parts with other kind of museums. Within the scope of thesis, except "Türvak Museum" which is in Istanbul, "Adana Cinema Museum", "Eye Film Museum (Amsterdam)", "London Film Museum" and "London Movie Museum" were examinated on-site. Realizing the origins of cinema, the process of its creation and development, entrepreneurs of cinema and therefore understanding todays cinema position; bringing together the different parts of society and both create a cultural background and both create a social education place with various activites are among the most important functions of cinema museums. Consequently increase of these museums and academical works in this field are important and necessary. Key Words: Museums, cinema, film, television.
