Abstract (EN)

Illegal migration encompasses both unauthorized entry into a country and overstaying beyond the permitted period after legal entry. The assessment of irregular migration involves analyzing its occurrence in destination, transit, and source countries. Turkey, once primarily a transit country, has shifted towards becoming a destination for irregular migration. In recent years, Turkey has experienced a notable increase in irregular migration. This thesis begins by providing definitions and theoretical insights into migration phenomena. It then explores the impact of rising irregular immigrant numbers on wages and exchange rates using an Almon model. The study's findings reveal a correlation and interaction between the influx of irregular immigrants and fluctuations in wages and exchange rates. It becomes evident that an increase in irregular immigrants tends to depress wages in the labor market and elevate exchange rates. The research emphasizes the potential for pragmatic solutions to the challenges posed by irregular migration. Addressing these issues could significantly boost the supply of labor in the secondary job market, especially in areas where domestic workers are reluctant to engage, transforming the irregular migration issue into an opportunity. Additionally, the study underscores the link between irregular immigration and increased exchange rates, while proposing solutions to address mounting exchange rate pressures.
