Femicides in Türkiye

Worldwide, nearly one in three women is thought to have experienced violence at some point in their lives. It is known that as long as the violence against women is not stopped, femicides, one of the worst consequences of violence, will increase. Violence against women and femicide is a very important issue that needs to be emphasized, and many studies have been conducted in this area. In this study, it is aimed to examine the national and international articles published on femicide in Turkey, the data published by the ministry and non-governmental organizations, and to research current data on femicide in Turkey, and to offer solutions for reducing femicide by evaluating the obtained data. Considering the femicide data in Turkey, there are differences between the ministry and non-governmental organizations. This inconsistency is an obstacle to revealing the situation of femicides clearly. There are many economic, psychological or cultural risk factors affecting femicide. When the studies are examined, the close relationship between the murdered women and the perpetrators draws attention. At the same time, individual armament is one of the biggest factors in the increase in femicides. It is thought that concepts such as gender inequality and honor underlying femicide should be emphasized more. In order to take real measures on femicides; It is urgently necessary to abandon the patriarchal ideology, change the general view of the society towards women, and the approach of constructing the concept of honor on the life and freedom of women should be abandoned immediately. It is thought that it would be beneficial to carry out more studies on the perpetrators of the murder as well as the victims, and to collect these studies in a common pool, in terms of eliminating the factors that encourage committing the murders. In the trial process of femicide cases, for whatever reason, the abolition of the penalty reduction will also strengthen the deterrent feature of the punishment.
