Changes in chronic diseases and multimorbidity prevalance in turkey

Chronic diseases and multimorbidity are common in the community.The aim of this study is to examine the 11-year change in the prevalence of multimorbidity and chronic diseases according to age, gender, educational status and IBBS regions from 2008 to 2019 in Turkey. For this research, the data were used from the Turkey Health Survey, conducted by TUIK every 2 or 3 years from 2008 to 2019. TUIK Health Survey is a cross-sectional survey that examines self reported health and health-related behaviors and represents the whole nation. The number of participants over the age of 15 analyzed in the databases of each year from 2008 to 2019 is 14655, 14447, 28055, 26075, 23606, 17084, respectively. Descriptive statistics for chronic diseases and multimorbidity were calculated according to gender, age groups, educational status and IBBS regions by using the weights provided by TUIK in each TUIK Health Survey database, and Simple linear regression analysis was performed for multimorbidity. Absolute and relative changes in chronic diseases and multimorbidity over the 11-year period were examined in the EXCEL program. Although there was an increase in the prevalence of hypertension, asthma, diabetes, and heart disease excluding stroke in the period from 2008 to 2019, the highest increase was in the prevalence of COPD with 5.5% in absolute terms, 239% in relative terms, and in the prevalence of depression with 5.8% in absolute terms and 144.5% in relative terms. The prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity is increasing gradually.
