Turkey's introduction to NATO and their effects

The World War II, which has led to major breaks in the world history, has also paved the way for alliances and political orientations in Turkish Foreign Policy which will continue for many years. NATO membership as a result of the Turkish statesmen's security seeking in the setting of an emerging regional and global uncertainty during the post war period, has been a process that unanimously adopted by the government and the opposition groups. Since the beginning of the Cold War, NATO membership which was the most important factor in determining the basic axis and preferences in Turkey's foreign policy orientation has been the focal point of our work. In addition, the politics which had been carried out in the key foreign policy issues during the Democratic Party has been discussed in the context of the relations between Turkey and NATO. For a better understanding to this period that came up to the establishment years of the liberal-competitive democracy in Turkey and set the stage for the principles of Turkish foreign policy in the 1990s, various findings have been reached with an extensive bibliography. It was observed that respectively, the foreign policy carried out by the Inonu and Menderes governments in the axis of the NATO membership gradually moved from the basic foreign policy principles of Ataturk era and concessions were given occasionally from the national sovereignty through the international treaties. In these circumstances, the 1950s that diplomacy took place of the hot wars in the World, was the period that paved the way for a new foreign policy in terms of Turkey.
