Samsun during the dissemination of popular music culture in Turkey between 1960's and 1970's

The popular music's scope is expanding on daily basis as it reaches out to new audiences with the help of development in the music industry and technology. Through various social network channels, different cultures and regions around the world are in a constant exchange of music culture, as they learn more about popular music of different cultures/regions as well as getting influenced by the new generation of popular music created by the today's music industry. In that regards, this exchange withdraws the traditional music culture from its position and leads the new and favored popular music to influence and create a new sense of modern music. Between the years of 1960's and 1970's in Samsun, musicians and composers were directly influenced by this new wave of popular music with the help of concerts, radio, popular music programs, books and various publishing done in the region. Furthermore, with the improvement and popularity of vinyl records, music tapes and the new genre of movie industry, the popular music was able to influence individual's music styles and their social lifestyles. As the new popular music culture reached out to the masses, this motivated people into learning new instruments which were associated with that popular music culture, as a result, led to formation of new local music bands. The aim of this thesis is to find reasons on why and how musicians of Samsun were influenced and motivated by the new genre of popular music by researching shifts on the types of instruments been used and changes in the methods of conducting music. Last, the thesis focuses on societal changes through assessing the social life in general and the newly formed audiences of the popular music culture.
