Plants used as traditional in the treatment of Rhinosinusitis in turkey

Sinusitis disease is a frequent disease which can cause significant amount of labor loss in terms of its acute attacts. Also resistance to treatments in use and recurrent sinusitis can lead patients to the surgicalt reatment. Therefore, many complementary medicine methods are tried by patients. At the very begining of this thesis studies, a questionnaire study was conducted to determine which conventional treatments or medicinal plants were used by the patients suffer from sinusitis. Survey results reveale dosage of complemantary medicines besides herbal products by the patient. According to the survey results; literatures from international science index was screened during the research conducted. Studies about the pharmacological effects medicinal plants which are used against sinusitis are screened from the thesis, articles, journals and printed books on the topic. Main purpose of this thesis is examination of mechanism of effect of phytotherapeutic plants and other complementary medicine methods especially in terms of analgesic, antienflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antiallergic activity which are basict reatment mechanisms that we expect from chemical drugs for the treatment of sinusitis.In addition,the methods applied directly to the nasal mucosa have been investigated in the light of ethnobotany and scientific studies to date and some complications have been identified in these applications. At the end of the research it was detected that Nigella sativa,Lavandula stoechas, Zingibar officinale,Mentha piperita,Thymus vulgaris,Matricaria chamomilla have antienflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antiallergic, analgesic, antioxidant effects. All of these activites can be obtained with multi-drugusage in terms of chemical drugs while we can obtain same effect with only one or two phytotherapeutic product which are also safetouse in treatment.On the other hand Ecballlium elaterium which is a frequently used against sinüsitis in folk medicine which is a poisonous plant can not be used safely because of its side effects of treatments.Besides these treatment with plants in sinusitis ,it was observed that the other complementary medicine methods such as cupping therapy, hirudotherapy and acupuncture treatments can also be used in treatments of sinüsitis.
