Agricultural sector in Turkey and agriculture policies in 2000s

Agriculture has an important place in terms of food security, food supply continuity, income, employment and foreign trade for both developing countries and developed countries. In this context, agricultural policies use different tools in order to accomplish different objectives such as to find solutions to the structural problems of the agricultural sector, to provide a balance between supply and demand, to contribute to the economy. From the Republican era to 1980, the economy was based on agriculture, the majority of the population was employed in the agricultural sector and agriculture was supported by protectionist policies. With the decisions taken in 1980, the transition to liberal economy began and agricultural support policies were reduced. İn the 1990s, from a structure with state support in the economy was passed to market economy. After 2000, in agricultural policies a new era has started with the efforts of agricultural reform. In this period, based support and direct income support were been effective. With these policies, the support of the state in the agricultural field has been reduced. İn this study; The structure of the agricultural sector, its place in Turkey's economy and policies applied in agriculture after 2000 were discussed.
