An analysis of the themes of virtue, value, and action in the reading texts of the 5th grade Turkish textbook within the framework of the century of Türkiye Maarif Model

The aim of this study is to analyze the reading texts in the 5th grade Turkish textbook prepared within the framework of the Century of Türkiye Maarif Model (TYMM) based on the Virtue-Value-Action approach. In this research which employs the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques, the reading texts in the 5th grade Turkish textbook were examined, the values expressed in these texts were classified, and these values emphasized frequency was identified. This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter presents the research problem, aim, significance, assumptions, and limitations. Additionally, it introduces the main concepts of the study, provides definitions, and reviews previous relevant studies. In the second chapter definitions were made on the theoretical framework. It discusses the importance and historical development of values education, various approaches to values education, classifications made by experts, and explains the vision, student profile, and virtue-value-action concept structure of the Century of Türkiye Maarif Model. The third chapter outlines the research method, study materials, and data analysis techniques. In the fourth chapter, the values in the reading texts were identified and presented in tables. These values are explained with example sentences taken from the texts under separate headings. The tables include the number of times each value appears and offer interpretative commentary on the examples. The fifth chapter presents the conclusions of the study along with related discussions and recommendations. The results of the research are discussed in terms of the meaning of values, frequency analysis, and thematic distribution. It was found that the values are addressed directly or indirectly in the reading texts of the 5th grade textbook updated within the TYMM framework. When the harmony between values and themes is examined, it is observed that the textbook aligns with the TYMM Virtue-Value-Action framework. However, while some values were found to be heavily emphasized, others were rarely addressed. In total, 326 values were identified in the reading texts. The most frequently emphasized values were love, responsibility, diligence, sensitivity, respect, family unity, healthy living, and patriotism. On the other hand, the least emphasized values were aesthetics, cleanliness, privacy, and justice
