Abstract (EN)

The reduction of emissions in Internal Combustion Engines by better combustion concepts is currently one the main research topics. The main subject of these investigations is developing the engines with zero engines. The standards imposed by the authorities forces the automotive industry to reduce the pollutants. These standards surely result in additional costs to the manufacturers. In order to reduce the additional costs better combustion concepts have to be developed. Changing the piston geometry and different injection concepts belong to some of these strategies. In the present study the piston of a DMD, Dual Mode Diesel, engine concept with direct injection designed by Dogu Motor Arge is optimised using CFD, Computational Fluid Dynamics for 3D turbulent reacting flow. The typical spray pressure for Common Rail Diesel Injection is around 2000 bar. In the present study the rail pressure is reduced to 800 bar to see the effects on combustion efficiency. Secondly the piston geometry is changed in order to improve the combustion efficiency. The spray cone angle and SOI, Start of Injection, times have been changed for parametric studies.
