Evaluation of personal beliefs, post traumatic growth and sociocultural adaptation between individuals who moved to another country

There is an increasing interest in conducting studies about migration and immigration facts between psychiatrists and clinical psychologists worldwide. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the relationship between personality beliefs, sociocultural adaptation, and post-traumatic growth of individuals who change their countries. Fort his, 352 Iranian citizens between 18-50 of age who settled in Turkey either for business and/or educational purposes have participated. The sample consists of 193 (54.8%) women and 156 (48.2%) men who participated in the survey. Accordingly, the Personality Belief Scale, Sociocultural Adjustment Scale, Multicultural Personality Scale, Acculturation Strategies Scale, and Post Traumatic Growth Scale were used in the survey questionnaire. Then, the relationship between the variables was evaluated using correlation, regression, and structural model analysis. According to the conducted analysis, no significant relationship was found between age, duration of residence, post-traumatic growth, and personality beliefs. However, a significant relationship was observed between age and residence period when compared to the sociocultural adaptation. When the relationship between personality beliefs and sociocultural adaptation was evaluated, it was shown that individuals with categorical personality beliefs had difficulties in sociocultural adaptation. Also, a negative and significant relationship was observed between personality beliefs and posttraumatic growth variables. On the other hand, a negative and significant relationship between multicultural personality and sociocultural adaptation variables was recognized. Then, by evaluating the results of the correlation analysis, two different models were devloped to study the relationship between variables. In the first model, the effect of personal belief on the prediction of post-traumatic growth using sociocultural adjustment was investigated. It was concluded that sociocultural adjustment has a partial mediating role between personality beliefs and post-traumatic growth. In the second model, a hypothetical model was established to test the mediating effect of sociocultural adaptation in the prediction of multicultural personality by acculturation strategies. Based on the results, the sociocultural adjustment has a partial mediating role in the relationship between multicultural personality and acculturation strategies. It can be concluded that obtained results can contribute to the understanding of the psychosocial factors associated with migration and to the intervention approaches that can be developed to help migrants experiencing multicultural personality and post-traumatic growth.
