International conflicts and media; Colombia peace process analysis in the case of CNN International

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to analyse international conflict and CNN International's effect on peace process in Colombia. In addition, the role of the developments in media and mass media after the Cold – War in conflict resolution and peace process will be assessed. Media and mass media have impact on creating media, mobilizing masses and agenda setting. Media's this impact brings up some subjects such as human rights violations, war, genocide, terrorism, conflict and peace process to the agenda. This impact is of great significance for the continuity of democracy, the resolution of disputes and the peace-building. With globalization and the development of mass media, new changes and transformations have taken place in international diplomacy. The armed clashes between the Colombian government and the FARC then the democratic negotiations between two sides were broadcasted to the world by CNN International. In this study, the impact of adoption and internalization in CNN International's news texts on the construction of negative or positive peace in Colombia during the abovementioned process will be evaluated. Furthermore, the concepts of conflict resolution, preventive diplomacy, humanitarian intervention, reconciliation, mediation, negotiation, conflict transformation and peace models will be analysed.
