In the context of the small state approach in international relations analysis of Serbian's foreign policy in post-Yugoslavia

Studies in International Relations have mostly examined the relations between great powers. The concept of small states emerged in the post-cold war era. Small states have come into prominence in international relations with the independence of many small states. In addition international system consist of small states rather than large states. It has become important to analyze the foreign policies of small states. It is envisaged that small states will act under the influence of large states and international actors due to their limited resources. Small states can demonstrate common foreign and security policies with large states or other small states. Serbia which will examine in the small state approach, had transition to multi-party system after the cold war. Since the end of former Yugoslavia President Slobodan Miloseviç's rule in 2000, Serbia has undergone a radical transformation. This transformation has affected the political balance in Serbia. Serbian foreign policy is a very remarkable field of study in terms of the small states approach. This study will examine the definition of small states that are discussed in the discipline of international relations, contradictions and differences in identification of small states will be revealed. Literature on foreign policy and alliance behavior os small states will be examined. Serbia's foreign policy which is analyzed as model country, will be discussed especially within the framework of its relations with the EU, Russia, China and the United States. In the first part of thesis, the question of what is a small state in international relations and what factors the foreign policies of small states consist of will be sought. In the second part, the questionn of what is the historicak background of Serbia which will examine as a model country. In the third part, Serbia's foreign policy will be explained in the context of its relations with the United States, EU, China and Russia and how it is shaped in the post-Yugoslavia and new era.
