The future of university libraries: Advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence and big data analytics

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to software that simulates human intelligence processes such as learning, reasoning, self-correction, and creativity. AI has a profound impact on library operations. This study focuses on the adoption of AI in the field of librarianship, addressing both the potential challenges and benefits of AI use, while emphasizing that AI is the most effective technology to contribute to the digitization process. The study covers various aspects of AI use in library processes, including reference services, cataloging, classification, indexing, and the application of expert systems in acquisitions. Furthermore, it focuses on a wide range of AI topics, from natural language processing applications to pattern recognition and robotic applications in library activities. The research thoroughly examines the challenges that may arise during the transition to AI use in libraries, such as financial uncertainties, skill gaps, and resistance in workflow processes. However, it also highlights the benefits that AI can bring, such as improving operational efficiency, enhancing user experience, and reaching broader audiences through new services. The study also offers recommendations on how libraries can position themselves to fully benefit from AI. The research aims to assess the current knowledge of AI and big data in university libraries and among librarians in Turkey, while reflecting the transformation of libraries worldwide. As information and technology rapidly advance globally, libraries are evolving beyond their traditional roles and adopting modern technologies. In this context, advanced technologies like AI and big data analytics are shaping the future of libraries. The research focuses on libraries from universities ranked in the top 20 in the URAP 2023-2024 list.
