Examining the relationship between social desirability and masculine behavior and narcissim in university students

In this study, the relationship between social desirability and masculine behavior and narcissism in university students was examined. The study group consists of students studying at the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture of Akdeniz University. The research was conducted with a total of 521 university students, 264 female and 257 males, in the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The Narcissism Scale developed by Raskin and Hall (1979) and adapted into Turkish by Öngen, the Social Likeability Scale developed by Evren, E. and Yurtçu, M. and Kalın, Ö. and Koçoğlu, E. (2021), the Masculine Behavior Scale developed by Sarıçam, H. and Sığın, A. (2020) and the Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher were used to collect the research data. The research data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, t test and multiple regression techniques. When narcissism, social desirability and masculine behavior were examined in terms of gender, male university students scored higher than female university students in narcissism total, exhibitionism and power dimensions. It was found that the social desirability acceptance sub-dimension was a significant predictor of the narcissism total, exhibitionism and power dimensions in male university students, but the attention sub-dimension was not a predictor. In female university students, it was found that the social desirability attention sub-dimension was not a predictor of the total and power sub-dimensions of narcissism, but it was a predictor of the narcissism exhibitionism sub-dimension. It was found that the social desirability acceptance sub-dimension was a predictor of the narcissism total, exhibitionism and power dimensions in female university students. It was found that the masculine behavior, dedication to success dimension was a significant predictor of the narcissism power sub-dimension in male university students, but it was not a predictor of the narcissism total and exhibitionism sub-dimensions. It was found that the masculine behavior, dedication to success dimension was a significant predictor of the total and power sub-dimensions of narcissism in female university students, but it was not a predictor of the narcissism exhibitionism sub-dimension. It was found that masculine behavior, exaggerated self-confidence and control sub-dimensions were significant predictors of narcissism total, exhibitionism and power sub-dimensions in female university students. It was concluded that masculine behavior, exaggerated self-confidence and control sub-dimensions were predictive of narcissism total and power sub-dimensions, but not narcissism exhibitionism sub-dimensions among male university students.
