Comparision of university students compassion levels in relation to doing sports

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the compassion levels of university students according to whether they do sports or not. A total of 856 people, 362 women and 494 men, studying in different departments of Atatürk University, participated in the research voluntarily. The "Compassion Scale" developed by Pommier (2011) and adapted into Turkish by Akdeniz ve Deniz (2016) was used. The obtained data were analysed with SPSS 25.0 statistical package program, 'Independent Sample T Test' and 'One Way Analysis of Variance' in multi-group comparisons, together with TUKEY tests to detect significant differences. The results were interpreted at the .05 significance level. When the research data are examined, the total score of the compassion scale in all sub-dimensions according to the gender variable and the total score of the "kindness" according to the age variable, the sub-dimensions of 'awareness of sharing' and 'total compassion' according to the age variable differed from the financial income variable of the household. According to the 'kindness' and 'indifference' sub-dimensions according to the sport status variable, in the 'disconnection' and disconnection sub-dimension according to the sport type variable, in the 'disconnection' sub-dimension according to the sport type variable, and in the "time to do sports" sub-dimension according to the variable Significant differences were found between the groups in the sub-dimensions of 'being aware of sharing', 'disconnection', 'disconnection' and 'total compassion'. No significant difference was found in other sub-dimensions. In the research, while gender, age, household income, sports status, type of sports, duration of sports are effective in various dimensions of compassion; It was concluded that the department he studied was not an effective variable in compassion.
