Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on quality of life and its relationships with sociodemographic properties. The study was planned to determine the PMS effects on quality of life of individuals, to reduce the loss of power at work due to PMS, and to increase the rate of consulting to a doctor. This study was conducted on 80 housewives, 80 adolescents, and 80 health workers in Afyon, a total of 240 women. During data collection face-to-face method was used, and a standard questionnaire method was applied. The questionnaire consists of the questions about sociodemographic properties and SF-36 inventory. SF-36 includes 8 sub-levels, these are Physical Functioning, Role-Physical, Bodily Pain, General Health, Vitality, Social Functionins, Role- Emotional, Mental Health.Thirty five point four percent of women who experienced PMS are up to 26 ages. The most observed premenstrual symptoms among women were mad attitude, bulge in abdomen, fatigue, breast tension, anxiety, and headache. According to the results, significant relation was found between occupation and mental health when we compare occupation with all dimensions of the quality of life (p<0.05). The higher score in mental health was observed in housewives while adolescents showed the lower score. As a result, housewives with PMS have better quality of life in mental health dimension. Adolescents and health workers have poorer scores on the quality of life.PMS negatively influences the quality of life. According to the results of this study, it was seen that employed women were more affected from PMS. Higher scores in quality of life were found in the group that has regular menstruations. Significant differences in this group were found in 6 dimensions of quality of life (p<0.05). When occupation is compared with dimensions of the quality of life, a significant difference was found only in mental health dimension (p<0.05), while there was no significant relation in other dimensions. Asking question about PMS, this study makes clear that PMS is a syndrome that can be treated. If women are well informed about PMS, the rate of consulting to a doctor can be increased. Thus, reducing PMS incidence results in improving the quality of life, and reducing the loss of power at work.
